Cane Corner
Cane
Corner Antique & modern Chairs proffesionally reseated
with split cane and rush
Cane
Corner, based in Devon, was launched in 1985 when an all-consuming
hobby developed into a full-time job.
The
restoration of chairs (and other curiosities!) in all
their guises, using different seating methods and materials,
meant that learning was ‘done on the job’
whilst restoring chairs brought at auctions, sales etc.
The big step of moving on to ‘paid work’ was
a huge milestone.
Customers
include the National Trust, Trade and Private Clients,
Conservation Groups, also work has been carried out for
overseas customers.
No
matter how bad the condition of the chairs that enter
the workshop they always leave in a much better state
of repair. Job satisfaction, (whilst not paying the bills!)
is extremely satisfying.
We
offer a full restoration service - repairs, polishing
and upholstery if required.
Cane Corner emphasises the importance of re-seating a
chair with whatever materials it was originally designed
to receive. Often, over the years, history has seen the
wrong type of material used, either because the right
“Skill” was not found, or more often, the
cost was prohibitive, but at least the chair was still
serviceable!
The
range of materials used includes Split Cane, Seagrass,
Rush (which we harvest ourselves in the west country).
Rope, Shaker tape, Danish Cord, Leather thonging, and
many others.
Many
of these chairs date back to the 1740’s. With the
correct restoration, they will last as long again!
